Shelagh Pritchard, Chair

Shelagh Farrington-Pritchard, a native of the Bahamas, holds the position of Chairwoman and volunteer executive director of Lignum Vitae Bahamas.  One of fourteen founding members who birthed the registered NGO five years ago, she has 25 years of experience working with youth and families.  Educated in Nassau and United Kingdom, she is a founding member of Blairwood Academy, which continues to educate children who have learning disabilities.  Her passion for multi-sensory education led her to a collaboration with The University of Florida’s 4-H IFAS extension services and she leads the Bahamas 4-H National Youth Development Plan for the Bahamas.  In the area of Life-skills development in youth, she has been involved in community development and utilizing Bahamas 4-H Activities to implement youth-oriented clubs for after-school and weekends.  Pritchard has an interest in internationalizing Extension and has worked with the UF IFAS International Professor Dr. Norma Samuel to develop trainings in starting and maintaining 4-H clubs. Approved volunteers are given an opportunity to participate in Florida Youth Development Institute and National 4-H Forums.

Pritchard’s research into economic empowerment for “at risk” impoverished women and mothers led to the creation of a consumer-science pilot project launched in July 2012. Three years later, Lignum Vitae’s Hands-up sewing co-op continues to ensure that these women have and can take full advantage of opportunities to earn a living which is is fundamental to social and economic development. She recognizes the intrinsic importance of economic equality for women, understanding when they thrive, so do their families and societies.
